Handy kids

My father in-law is one of the handiest people I know, scratch that, HE IS the handiest person I know. Its the way he grew up as a boy in Ireland, if you want something done, figure it out. He’s a carpenter by trade but has fixed and built more projects in his personal time than anyone I know. Me? I’m not handy in the least. sure I can youtube a problem or project and if the instructions are well laid out I can get it done, but I don’t have the ability to problem solve the task the way my father in law does. To be honest very few people I know from my generation have that ability, we hire people. I don’t know if its fear of potential failure and the probability to make the task or problem worse? Or is it that since my father in law’s generation was so handy did I grow up letting my dad take care of things and never bothered to learn?

My goal is that my children get some exposure to this skill set of being handy. While they can I hope for them to learn from the master in allowing and encouraging them to work on projects with their grandfather. In addition I will do my best to get out of my comfort zone and include them on projects that I personally take on. Let’s start small :)
